| Scientist - News - 19-06-2007: Novel mechanism by which Lactobacillus salivarius kills Listeria bacteria Rijkers G. The research group in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre at University College Cork, have found a novel mechanism by which the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus salivarius can kill Listeria monocytogenes, an often lethal pathogen in pregnant women. The Lactobacilli kills the pathogen by a bacteriocin. The Figures of their publication in May 2007 issue of the prestigious Proceedings of the National academy of Sciences of the USA are depicted on the cover of the Journal, giving extra exposure for this important new finding.
