Research interests:
To introduce different probiotic concepts into the veterinary field as a possible replacement of antibiotics. Until then it was common practice to add antibiotics to the feed in order to improve weight gains and to prevent infections. In this project, which was partially funded by the Dutch Government, we have done various trials in calves, piglets and chickens and monitored the effect of probiotic administration on different health parameters. In summary it was shown that probiotics were able to lower the frequency and duration of diarrhoea, reduce antibiotic treatment needed for all kinds of infections and lower the incidence of mortality. However the most surprising results were probably that with probiotics we were able to improve respiratory health in calves.
Currently we are testing the effect of probiotics on the mucosal barrier function in a rat model of acute pancreatitis.
