| Professional experience: Paediatric Gaastroenterologist at Sydney Children's Hospital, Sydney and Senior Lecturer in the School of Women's and Children's Health, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Research interests: The overall objectives of his research activities are to delineate aspects of interactions between bacteria and the host epithelium and to ascertain how these innate responses contribute to further host responses. The primary focus of ongoing research activities is the setting of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Various complementary in vitro and in vivo studies are directed towards aspects of epithelial responses and aspects of the resident intestinal microflora. Laboratory studies are complemented by clinical studies, including various clinical trials of probiotics in the setting of IBD in children. A secondary focus is upon Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach as a further example of interactions between host epithelial cells and pathogens.
